Coming To A Screen Near You

Well, it's all happening...

Over the Christmas period and right up until mid-February I was preoccupied with putting my head above the parapet, more so perhaps than usual, as I was being followed around by TV cameras.

I'm appearing on the UK's Channel 4 next week in a documentary called 'How The Other Half Live' (screening on 8th April at 9pm), which was critically acclaimed when it was first shown last year. It's all about the lives of poor families and rich families and each week it follows the story of how a more affluent family help another in need. Interestingly, 'Save The Children' are sponsoring the series.

My wife and children are also in the show as it follows our introduction and developing relationship with the other family. I think you'll like it. It is quite moving and it certainly moved me to be in it - in fact, I felt very humbled by the experience.

Even more intriguing perhaps is how I'm going to be feeling after it goes out.

  1. I've just watched the show and I think what you did for the family was wonderful. They deserved it!

I have a person question: Did you or your wife go to Sussex University? I saw the certificate on your wall. If so, what did you study? I'm currently a student there, which is why I am curious!

  2. Hi David, Really enjoyed the documentary although I was really disappointed with how it ended. Would have been good to know how everyone got on further down the line.

You are a credit to your family and Britain, its refreshing to know there's still good people around in today's society.

    Thanks,

    John

  3. I just wanted to drop a note to say how much the programme ‘How the other half live’ it touched me and my husband. As a failed lawyer, turned marketer and mother, it was absolutely captivating!
Hats off to you for allowing your children to be exposed to the inequalities we face in life. It really captured the simplicity of child logic and defined the journey adults have to go through to re-discover life without prejudice.
Reality TV is always a gamble, but the programme portrayed your family as genuine, kind natured and grounded. You should be very proud.
Good luck in future with Caroline’s new role at your company. I hope she delivers and I am sure she has great potential.
    Warmest regards

  5. Hello
I just wanted to say how wonderful it was to watch you, your family, Caroline and Iris on the programme. I was fortunate enough to live in Stroud myself during the later part of my childhood and my teens before moving off to various other parts of the country for study and work in adulthood. I loved seeing so many familiar places but most of all I most so glad to see it remains that wonderful bubble. Seeing children being children, and parents actually parenting was so wonderful. You have a wonderful family and you have found another wonderful family to help get on their feet. Your children and Iris are the most polite and grounded children I have come across in a long time.
Best wishes to you all, and thank you for showing the nation that life can be rewarding when you live it for more than your own instant pleasure.

  6. OMG - I have never seen such procious children ever. Working in an inner city secondary school I would rather teach and work with 'my children' than yours. Nothing that a 'smack' would resolve!!!!

Sorry, to say but I do believe the news about you being a scammer and don't trust a word coming from your mouth!

Lets hope you don't loose it all.....

  7. Lets hope that you, 'Anonymous,' teach your children to spell properly!

It would be 'lose' you were looking for!

  8. Hmm, I think 'Anonymous' (9th April) also has other spelling difficulties too...

    First sentence: 'Procious' ?

What's that then? Would it be 'precious'? No, I don't think so, it would not fit with the derisory tone.

Perhaps 'Anonymous' (9th April) means 'precocious'? Hmm... Well, the dictionary definition is 'early maturity', 'intelligence', 'blossoming early'. That doesn't have the 'feel' of what 'Anonymous'(9th April) is struggling to articulate either. Unless, that is, 'Anonymous' (9th April) doesn't know the meaning of the word. Hmm...

I am saddened that as a teacher 'Anonymous' (9th April) is not helping in the English comprehension of her 'my children'. No small wonder that we have a problem with some of our inner city schools...

And all along I thought it was the kids.

  9. Hello, I thought it was the best episode of this series so far. You really made an impact (ie. giving a job is much better than offering cash hand outs). Good luck to both families.

  10. Hi David,
just thought I'd tell you that the programme aired last night in New Zealand :)

Certainly the most positive 'reality TV' I have seem for a long while.

    Keep up the good work!
